Efficient and organized shopping starts with a good menu plan. You shouldn’t let a lack of time prevent you from sitting down to create a workable plan. Once you complete a plan, it may take only half an hour and ends up saving you plenty of time. Additionally, you are able to offer meals with good nutritional value to your family members.

•	Try to not to be intimidated by the whole process. If creating a week’s worth of menus feels like too daunting a task, you should aim for 3 or 4 days. You will be inspired by your progress and want to expand it.

•	Plan how often you should visit the grocery store. In general, weekly menu plan works nicely for most families because you’ll always have fresh produce and you can take advantage of monthly grocery store sales. With less frequent trip to the store each month, you’re saving time, money and gas, but an even more important benefit is that you can avoid impulse buying, which, may account for half of all monthly expenses. As you are getting better at organizing things, you should try to improve yourself by creating a monthly plan or at least a biweekly plan.

•	Check your calendar. Consider how many meals you can make between grocery store visits. Which days you need to lunch at work as well as breakfast? Will there be times when the whole family won’t be at home, or a day when there are more people to feed at home than your immediate family members? You should take time constraints into when preparing menu. Having a complicated recipe on a busy night won’t make sense if you have barely enough time to cook.

•	Check your inventory regularly. Take quick note of anything with expiration dates. Include them when creating a menu to avoid waste. This is also a good time to organize your refrigerator. Remove anything that is already expired, and rearrange everything in it.

•	Stock up on basic stuffs. If you’re running low on common things like milk, salt, flour, eggs, and egg, make sure you include them to your grocery list.

•	Be specific when creating a list. Using general terms like “cheese” or “pasta” leaves plenty room for open interpretation. What varieties and kinds of cheeses? Occasionally even a well-planned list will get out of control. When you make your list, try to be as specific as possible.

•	Check what’s on sale. Find recipes that combine well what you already have at home with things that are on sale at the grocery store. Say, if you have carrots and potatoes at home and beef roast is best deal this weekend, then pot roast is a good addition for your menu plan.

•	Have your boiler maintained regularly. This won’t only make it works more efficiently but it is also safer. Safety shouldn’t be compromised in your pursuit of saving money.

•	Try lowering the temperature by one or two degree at a time until you start feeling chilly. It is possible that if you lower the temperature on the heating control by just one degree, you’ll save between 5 and 10 percent of the annual heating bill. It is a substantial saving for an unnoticeably lower temperature.

•	Remember to turn your heating off when it isn’t needed. If you know that you’re going out for a few days, turn it off or turn it down to the lowest possible level without damaging your appliances or killing your fish pets.

•	Buy fuel out of season. If your heating system uses solid fuel or oil make enquiries about purchasing a quantity during the hottest summer month to get the best price possible.

•	Set the timer wisely to conserve energy. If your family can make do with the heater coming on ten minutes later and turned off ten minutes earlier, then you may save a worthwhile sum of money during the winter.

•	It is important that the central heating system uses a thermostat and timer at the very least. You should use a model that has individual thermostat on the radiator. One cause of power inefficiency is that you only use one thermostat and it controls the temperature for the entire house. If your thermostat is located in either a particularly cool or warm room, your house will be heated based on the temperature in that room. It means that the house is either too warm or too cold. By using TRVs (thermostatic radiator valves), you can have an efficient and more accurate control. It would be possible to adjust the temperature for each room in your house, because some rooms may need to be cooler than others: living room is usually kept warmer than hallways, for example. If you can adjust the most optimum temperature for each room, it won’t only save you some cash but you’ll feel easier with the temperature. However, TVRs are rather hard to fit and it could be necessary to have them installed by a technician, unless you’re very competent at electronics yourself.

•	When the boiler is being serviced, it would be preferable to ask the technician to measure its efficiency. It’s now possible to get highly efficient boilers than ten or twenty years ago. A newer boiler model can save up to $150 each year. This is rather a significant saving and it may go on saving you money for many years.

Marketers have researched consumers and their buying habits. Being aware of their strategies can help you become a smart shopper. After all, every dollar and cents matter. Here’s what you should know:

•	You shouldn’t assume things that are displayed at the ends of the shelf are on sale. They’re prime real estate in a store. And even if they are displayed as a bargain, it is likely the prices are still too high. Look for things at the middle of the aisle.

•	Things that are placed at the lower part of the shelf are usually cheaper. More expensive brands usually invest on better placement. However, in kids sections, the prime real estate is lower on the shelves where those little eyes may see them quickly.

•	The freshest products may be placed deeper. Things near their expiration date often placed at the front so they can be sold quickly. When you want to buy dairy products, meat, vegetables and fruits, sometimes looking a little deeper may give you fresher products.

•	Items that are on fliers are not always sale items. You shouldn’t assume that if an item makes it to the fliers, it is on sale. Many times products advertised aren’t on sale at all. Always track the prices of frequently purchased items to know whether you have a great deal on your hand.

•	Watch for “loss leaders.” They are usually displayed prominently on the supermarket circulars and occasionally on the back. They’re discounted heavily and the supermarket takes a “loss” with the hope that consumers may come, buy more items with ‘positive’ profit margin and offset the loss. One important clue that a product is a loss leader is that you have a limit on the amount you can purchase.

•	Smaller package sizes can be more expensive. Some manufacturers often use smaller packages to boost profits. The best way to compare prices is to look at the quantity vs. cost. Always have a calculator ready at hand to determine cost per ounce or per unit price to allow you make an informed buying decision.

•	Use loyalty programs efficiently. Supermarkets claim that loyalty programs are a good way to save money. Even so, grocers know that loyalty programs only good for getting you to spend a lot more in the process. It is likely that stores with frequent shopper cards use higher markups. Keep track of the price to determine whether a loyalty program works in your favor.

•	Don’t take the direct route. There is a reason why milk, eggs, meat, and other basics are located at the back of the store. Supermarket designers place inessentials, like snacks or clothing, at the direct route to the basics and staples, so customers will linger just a bit longer and pick up a couple of things. If you find it difficult to resist those products, avoid them.

It is often referred to as the best day of our life and unfortunately it is also an expensive one. Many people spend massive amounts of money because it is the day they want to remember. The wedding day goes by so fast that is easy to overlook the Herculean efforts that went into making it happen.

It’s the dream of most brides to have a ‘perfect wedding’, with all things planned to the smallest detail. Weddings in a country may differ with in each country, but ways to keep the cost down should be nearly the same. You can save money in a few areas and spend it on others. It is important, however, that you spend as much as you can afford without jeopardizing your financial life.

Clothes
Wedding ceremony is a perfect time to dress up. Brides may spend months choosing the dress that will awe the guests and it can cost thousands of dollars, or just a few hundreds. No matter how much the price is, for a dress that is worn only once, it still costs an arm and a leg. You have an option to rent and although you wouldn’t have the luxury of showing your daughters your wedding dress, it could save you a lot of money. One benefit of renting a dress is that you can hire the most beautiful dress for cheaper than buying a standard wedding dress.

The Venue
The church usually makes a charge for a wedding ceremony and a choir may cost you even more. Even a very simple wedding in registry office costs you some money. Obviously, choosing a venue should be a balance between cost, luxury and size.

Invitations
Making a guest list involves spending days wondering who you should and shouldn’t invite, and it may cause friction. When your list is completed, the invitations must be printed. It may save you a lot of money if you can design and print them at home. You may not need gold embossed invitations, it would be better to choose a good quality paper and be creative instead.

Transport
Rather than going to the church in a common car, most people want something a little more special. The selection is usually something like a classic car or a large luxury like a Bentley. It is a good idea to borrow a classic car from a friend who might be willing to drive you to the venue for free! Another option is to contact a classic car club so you may get a good deal from one of its members.

There seems to be an unending array of innovative, new kitchen gadgets that are introduced to the market. Although they are fun and save you plenty of time, there is an added issue of how to store all these equipments and many of them need electricity. Therefore only use or buy appliances that are both essential and affordable.

Dishwasher
Many people would find it difficult to do without dishwasher once they have one, but it is possible that you’re also tempted to over-use it. Don’t use the dishwasher more than once or twice a day, stack dirty plates and use the dishwasher in the evening or when you reach the full capacity. If you’re really trying to tighten your expenses, you might even consider washing the dishes manually.

Tumble dryer
It is one innovation that is exceptionally useful for wet countries. Washing clothes is always a chore, especially when rain never stops. As the result, some people choose to buy tumble dryer and just forget about the weather. Having a tumble dryer can be a poor decision because it needs plenty of electricity to run, but you can buy it if you have no other choices. There are a few dryer models that can sense the clothes humidity and switch themselves off automatically. Don’t overfill the tumble dryer as it won’t dry the clothes as quickly.

Another consideration is that tumble dryer can deposit a large amount of fluff or cloth fibers. It indicates that clothes tend to wear out quicker with the dryer due to the friction. It means not only your dryer is a poor choice in terms of energy usage, it also means your clothes will need replacing sooner.

Freezers and fridges
•	Always site your freezer and fridge in the coolest place with no direct sunlight. If your freezer or fridge is placed near warm appliances such as cooker, it may need to consume more electricity to keep the temperature down.
•	Always place your appliances at least one inch from the wall for better air circulation and to let hot air escapes.
•	Don’t leave the door open too long, and avoid placing hot food in your fridge as it needs more power to cool down.
•	Occasionally check the seals for deposits and clean them.
•	Defrost your freezer and fridge regularly, as they don’t run efficiently if they accumulate too much ice.

When buying a new appliance you should also consider its running costs. An appliance that is $20 more expensive than other models can be more efficient and requires $20 less to operate each year. If your appliance can last for ten years, then you can save $200 throughout its lifetime. The long term saving could essentially repay the original price.

Owning a car represents one of the biggest investments a person makes. Next to a house, owning a car is probably the next biggest investment. Not unlike maintaining a house, car maintenance can be quite costly. However, there are ways and means to help you reduce on your expenses in maintaining a car.

•	Treat your passengers and your car delicately. Accelerate softly and don’t act like you’re in a Grand Prix start line at each traffic light. Gently accelerating, cornering and braking will lower fuel consumption and stretch the life of tires, engine and brakes components.

•	Be sure that you use the most efficient gear. Keeping the RPMs low will reduce the fuel consumption. Don’t cruise in fourth gear on the highway if your car has fifth gear.

•	Unload heavy items if you don’t need to carry them around. The heavier the vehicle the more fuel will be required to overcome its inertia during an acceleration

•	If you’re stuck at a railway crossing or in a traffic jam for more than two or three minutes, turn off the car.

•	Keeping the car well maintained may make it more efficient and generating fewer harmful emissions.

•	If the car doesn’t run on unleaded gas you should have it converted. It’s worthwhile to do the conversion because unleaded gas is considerably cheaper than leaded gas, you’ll save money and reducing harmful emissions as well.

•	Drive at the most efficient speed especially on highways. You use 25% less fuel driving at 55mph than when you drive at 75mph.

•	Keep the tires at the perfect pressure: if your tires are under-inflated by 6psi, you could be wasting 5% of your fuel.

•	Remove the roofrack, if you don’t need it, as it makes your car less aerodynamic and you’ll use more fuel.

•	An improperly adjusted carburetor contributes to huge fuel inefficiency. Another reason for keeping the car well maintained is that it would be less likely to fail and leave you stranded. Though you’ll never know when the car will break down, it might cost you a good deal of time and money.

•	Call the nearest garages before choosing which one to use. Big dealer garages frequently charge much more than smaller local garages

•	Make sure to ask the garage to contact you before performing any serious and expensive repair works that you haven’t instructed them to do. It’s easier to negotiate the price before the task is started than after it is finished.

•	If you believe that the garage hasn’t fixed a few things, take the car back and if necessary watch your car being repaired even if you don’t actually understand it.

•	If, you think the bill is too high, ask them for more details. It is always a great idea to get an estimate before starting the work, even for trivial jobs.

Car servicing costs mostly consist of parts and labor. The labor charge is usually fixed, whilst the parts may vary in price depend on whether they’re ‘genuine’ (made by your car manufacturer), or made by third-party companies.

Credit cards can bring huge debts. Credit cards are really convenient because you do not need to worry about not having money during an emergency, just swipe that piece of plastic and everything will be fine. We may frequently buy groceries and pay bills on credit, paying the minimum monthly payment while still charging on the credit card each month. This will lead to the accumulating debt and an endless cycle of depression about not being able to pay even the minimum payment.

What people need to do is to cancel their cards. But if you need to keep one around in case of an emergency, these are a few ways to reduce the urge of buying anything with your card.

Don’t use more than one card
There is simply no reason to have three or even six credit cards. You should only use a single card, preferably one with the best interest rates and use it only in an emergency. People usually apply for more cards when they reach the limit of their previous cards, if you are in this situation, you need to immediately stop the cycle.

Lower your credit limit
Most credit card companies continue to progressively increase the credit limit on your card. But it does not mean that you should accept it straightaway. Call the customer service to give you a fixed credit limit and if possible lower your current credit limit. A low, fixed credit limit will prevent you to spend more.

Use cash
Most shops and gas stations that accept credit card may impose high interest and fees. There is no need to pay with a card, if you can pay with cash. The convenience is not worth it if you are accumulating credit card debt which attracts hefty interests. Remember, the more you use the card, the more interest you need to pay.

Leave credit cards at home
When you leave your home, leave your cards at home or tell someone you can trust to hide them somewhere.

Shred your cards
If hiding your cards isn’t enough, you may need to physically shred them. Also if you keep you credit card number somewhere, you should erase and burn it, hopefully you haven’t memorized it yet. But if you have memorized the number, ask your card company to issue a new one. This will effectively prevent yourself from charging the card while you are struggling to eliminate your debts.

There are savings that can be made in your kitchen in terms of environment, money and the time. Some of these advices may seem obvious for you and perhaps you already practice them, even so there’s no harm in repeating these simple savers.

•	Wash reasonably. Some detergents are concentrated and you only need a little amount. Don’t waste them.

•	When hand washing either clothes or dishes, always start from the cleanest items. It may save both detergent and water.

•	Washing up bowl is a better alternative than sink. It requires less cold and hot water, which can be expensive on a long-term. Washing up bowl allows rinsing really dirty items on cold water on one part of the bowl. It will make your task easier and you also need less hot water.

•	Don’t wash anything with a hot running tap

•	Don’t boil more water than you need: it is a waste of fuel and water. If you’re making hot water for a cup, it is faster and more efficient to use a saucepan with the lid on. It is also a good idea to use a gas cooker instead of an electric kettle.

•	Vegetable steamer is an efficient way to cook a large amount of vegetable, tofu and thin slices of meat

•	Use pressure cooker to prepare a dish faster and efficiently

•	If you use a gas cooker don’t let the flames engulf the saucepan. It can ruin your pan and a waste of fuel.

•	You can do many things with an oven. Main course can be cooked together with the vegetables. Once you understand how to cook different things at once, you may save plenty of time and minimize the amount you need to wash up. Certain recipes such as casseroles are perfect for cooking with an oven and it’s alright to overcook it a little bit.

•	If your bake often, you should prepare three or four times the usual amount and freeze the extra. You can save fuel and time in preparation.

•	It’s possible to turn off your oven 10 minutes faster as the oven can retain enough heat to cook the dish for the next 15 minutes. It only applies for dishes that are cooked for an hour or more

•	When cooking, you should keep the lids on pans, unless instructed otherwise.

•	Thinner and smaller food will be cooked faster, while saving you some cash.

•	If you know beforehand that you’ll be cooking something out of the freezer, put it out of the fridge for an hour or so. It will use less energy and cook faster.

We have all heard stories of how children of the bygone days only had a stick and a hoop to play with, and if those kids were lucky they might get a lump of coal or a bag of marbles. That was a far cry from how 21st century children can get their sophisticated toys.

One of the common problems is that many popular toys are derived from television or films programs. Whatever might be fashionable for one month could be old-fashioned the next when a new action figure arrives. A popular television series or cartoon might be accompanied by a wide range of merchandises such as clothes, stickers, books, or even snacks.

Children display an extraordinary degree of tenacity when it comes to asking parents buy these products. It’s all very well for those who can afford to indulge their children with expensive things; but for parents with a limited budget or even for middle class family, it may not always possible to buy all the latest toys. Trying to teach your kids about managing money and instilling a sense of control is an important part of being a good parent. Kids need to learn that they can’t have everything they want without putting an adequate amount of effort first, although explaining this to your child may not be easy. Keeping a child entertained doesn’t have to be expensive. We may laugh at memories of how children were laugh in the past, but maybe we often forgot how it incurs a great expense. Many of the old games and pastimes have been forgotten in a haze of computers, consoles and television. Just remember that game consoles have only been around for less than two decades. People might reason that keeping children entertained has always been costly, but at least technology seems to fall in cost as it improves in quality. Further, there are many excellent multimedia educational packages available today which will become cheaper as time goes on. Parents who are not familiar with latest electronic devices, have some alternatives to keep their children amused. These are a few examples:

•	Dressing up box for dolls, All families should have a dressing up box. It contains tiny outfits for soldiers, Indians, nurses, and cowboys. Children, especially girls, love putting on adult clothes on little dolls, especially dress, wigs and hats.

•	Papier mâché, All you need is paper, water, flour and a little glue. You can shape many things you want, which then can be painted.

•	Face paints, These are often available from toy shops or joke shops. Children may spend hours painting their bodies and faces, and they’ll find it even more entertaining if you allow them paint yours.

There are literally hundreds of ways to relax with your family: some may need money, others could be free. If you’re on a tight budget then it’s better to do a limited amount of activities to save money than indulging yourself with costly pursuits. Having an exciting family entertainment doesn’t necessarily have to be costly, these are five ways to have fun with your family without harming your financial situation:

1.	Rather than going to the movie, which can cost you $15 for the whole family, hire a DVD. To make the experience better, make your own hot-dogs and pop corn and turn off the lights.

2.	Don’t forget to make the best of the countryside while it is still free. Kids enjoy walking on the woods, it’s a good way to make them familiar with the nature, and good for your health as well.

3.	Look out for free shows which are often advertised in local newspapers. These shows often take place in open public places, town halls or churches. Just because a show is free, it doesn’t mean you’ll have a second-class entertainment, many voluntary entertainers are both skilled and dedicated.

4.	Dining out is absolutely entertaining. It gives you the chance to let other people trouble themselves with the cooking, and doing the dishes. You also feel like someone special, and the meal may surprise you with its unique texture and taste. In some countries, eating out is a costly luxury, while in other countries, eating out is only slightly more expensive than cooking at home and is therefore enjoyed often. So how to save money while eating out? Go for restaurants that give special deals, fast food chains and pizza restaurants are particularly tempting in this respect. Remember it is often more affordable to order a menu package than ordering à la carte. A menu package is usually designed for a certain number of people, so you can choose the appropriate package size for your group.

5.	A good way to save money on entertainment is by buying stand-by tickets. Many concerts and theatres offer discounts on the performance day and in some cases you may get half the price, it is a good way of seeing live shows on the cheap. If you’re attending a popular show, however, there could be a huge demand for seats, and the price gets more expensive on the performance day. It is usually a good idea to buy the ticket as soon as you can, as you might end up buying one from a ticket tout and pay much more than the original price. This is, certainly, something that you shouldn’t be doing if you’re trying to save some money.
