How many credit cards do you have?
It’s just too easy to get a credit card these days. Walk into any shopping mall and there are sales people literally throwing credit cards at you.
Some banks even send pre-approved credit cards by mail. I can tell you that it is flattering to be pre-approved for a Platinum card!
Today’s tip for my frugal beagles is to watch out for credit card overload:
- Just say no. Sometimes you may be tempted by free gifts or a promise of cash rebates, but watch out for the fine print. You never get something good without paying a price. For example, you may need to spend thousands of dollars for a 2% cash rebate to cover the annual fees.
- Look out for the hidden costs. It may be a boost to your ego to hold a platinum credit card, but the annual fees may kill you financially.
- Too many credit cards affect your credit score. Not paying attention to or Understanding credit score will come back to bite you the next time you apply for a loan. In our country we have a central credit rating system linked to all banks.
- Out of sight, out of mind. I only carry around two credit cards with me, one I use for all my transactions and one more as a backup. If you carry fewer credit cards, you won’t find an excuse to use them
If you think about it, there is no reason for you to own more than one credit card.
So, how many credit cards do you own?

1Hi Frugal Beagle, You’re cute!!! I’m a frugal Boxer running for president on a campaign of limited government and personal responsibility. Glad there are other dogs crusading for living within your means.
Mr Beagle: Hi Lola, welcome to my site!

2True. I however hold MANY cards. It’s not that I use all of them but each one that is linked to a merchant ie hypermarket, petrol station etc has managed to save me a few hundred RM a year. I pay in full and is always prompt. In summary, if you have the discipline cards can be useful and save you MONEY!!
Mr Beagle: Yes, I agree. I admire you for having the discipline. That way, you take advantage of credit cards instead of letting the banks take advantage of you.

3I personally hold one debit card (that deducts money from my account automatically) and an actual credit card (for backup purposes). Anyway, my mother kept nagging at me for a very long time when I signed up for the credit card. I have been more careful with my spending due to the fact that when I got my first debit card, I found myself having to borrow from my mother to buy meals. Sad but true. So, this is one experience I’ll never forget. But still, thanks for the article as you made me re-discover the “hazard” of owning too many cards if I can’t afford it in the first place.
Mr Beagle: Hi, welcome to my site and thanks for sharing! Really as Elle said we need to be disciplined when we hold credit or debit cards. I find it so easy to give in to that impulse purchase and charge it to my credit card, only to regret when the statement comes at the end of the month!
