Today’s Frugal Friday tip will be the last post in my Cook to Save series.

Frugal Friday tips are quick tips you can take with you, for you to practice as a weekend project.

We frugal beagles are always thinking about the cost of food. We know how to find food with the best value. Sometimes, we neglect the health aspect of food.

Here are some ways you can eat healthier, and save money:

1. Eat smaller portions

Eating smaller portions means you don’t have to buy so much food. Do you really need to have two bowls of rice every meal? Is it necessary to eat half a chicken all by yourself? A large sized ‘value meal’?

If you are eating out with someone else, just order a larger plate or bowl, and share.

Smaller portions also mean that you reduce waste. Have you thrown out extra food you couldn’t finish because you cooked too much? I have, and it’s not a pleasant feeling.

This is also helpful for those of us who are trying to lose weight
;)

2. Choose healthy ingredients

When you buy food, make sure you make healthy choices. Don’t go for something that is cheaper but could make you sick.

Don’t buy a product that is higher in fats, sugar, salt, artificial colouring or preservatives to save a few ringgit or a few sen.

Remember, what you eat is absorbed into your body. You don’t want to eat something that could damage your health.

3. Eliminate snacks

Skip those snacks and junk foods in between meals.

If you are eating a balanced diet, you shouldn’t need to eat between meals. If you still need to satisfy your urge to snack, choose healthy alternatives like some fruit.

Don’t have the habit of eating supper at night.

Conclusion

Healthy eating habits will result in a healthy body.

You save money in the short term because you are not spending as much on food.

In the long term, your good health will save you from expensive medical bills and paying for weight loss products.
